Cooking on a Boat
Cooking on a boat requires preparation and planning especially if your vessel has a small galley.
First, assess the configuration of your galley. Does it have a two burner stove, stove with oven, microwave, ice box, fridge with freezer?
Prepare the galley by cleaning all surfaces, lockers, and storage spaces. Lining the lockers with non skid runners or vinyl will keep the paint from marring.
With the amount of storage available, decide on the necessary pots, pans, dishes, and utensils needed for preparing meals.
Plan a menu for meals to be prepared on board according to the number of crew members, length of time you will be on board, and the facilities you have in the galley.
If possible, making meals at home to take on board saves time when boating. Using one pot recipes is another idea. Cooking once and eating twice saves time spent in the galley and also cuts down on the amount of provisions required. For instance when boiling potatoes for dinner, make extra to use the next day for fried potatoes for breakfast, or a potato salad for lunch or dinner.
